LACASA Center will be hosting a free film event on Thursday, June 25, 2020 to help raise awareness about disrupting the culture of silence and encouraging bystander intervention. The event is scheduled from 3:30pm – 5:30pm and will be held via Zoom conferencing.

The film “The Bystander Moment” will be shown in recognition of April’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month and is supported by the National Crime Victim’s Rights Week (NCVRW) Community Awareness Project. The film highlights the bystander approach model of gender violence prevention created by activist and writer Jackson Katz and his colleagues. The film highlights the role bystanders play in continuing and ending sexual assault. Learn more about the film at http://bystandermoment.org.

A discussion will follow the film to explore how we can, and already are, disrupting the culture of silence by encouraging bystander intervention through MVP and other programming in the high schools and institutions of higher education.

Panel will feature
Nicole Denson - Equality MI

Matt Oliver - Cleary University

April Woods - Pinckney Community Schools

Bill Vailliencourt & Pam Maas - Livingston County Prosecutor’s Office

Kristi Bell - Brighton Police Dept.

Awards will also be presented to local individuals and agencies that have gone above and beyond to “seek justice, ensure victim’s rights and inspire hope”, the NCVRW theme for this year. Recipients include Lake Trust Credit Union, ChemTrend, and the aforementioned panelists.
